On questions

How often do you question yourself, or others?

What are you doing? Why are you doing it? How are you doing it? How often do you self-inquiry?

Why/What/How are very powerful questions.

Sometimes, I find myself in a trance, especially when philosophizing – words simply flow out of me. Occasionally, I notice the other side falling into a trance as well, or maybe they are just plain confused.

While philosophizing is nice and it can bring insights, two-way communication is much better. A good way to break this trance is to ask them (or myself) a question. It can be as simple as “what do you think about that?”. I notice that when I do this, they just wake up and respond as if something stung them.

We are wired in such a way that something triggers in us when someone needs something from us. Asking questions is one way to instigate engagement.

  1. We spend a good proportion on our lives running on autopilot.

Of course, that’s fundamentally fine for most things. And, in fact, snapping out of autopilot can be more-disruptive than staying in it: ever lost your “flow” when something surprised you?

But it’s still worth being more consciously-aware of it. To wake up and ask “what am I actually doing here? and why?” once in a while.
