Conquering Depression: Heavenly Wisdom from God Illumined Teachers overview

Similarly to a previous overview, I bought this book called “Orthodox Psychology” some time ago. It contains two books inside, and I recently completed the first one:

  1. Neurosis: Spiritual Causes and Manifestations (original Нервность. Ее духовные причины и проявления), 1999
  2. Conquering Depression: Heavenly Wisdom from God Illumined Teachers, 1996

In this blog post, I’ll write an overview of the second book.

The book is organized as a collection of reflections, sometimes short, sometimes long. Capturing each one of them in a summarized list item.

What is depression

  1. The Spirit of Sadness: Sadness darkens the soul and distances it from God and virtue. Our main battle is against this demon.
    • Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. – 2 Corinthians 7:10
    • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness – Galatians 5:22
  2. Despair Is a Result of Lack of Faith: Weak faith easily leads to despair.
  3. Moderate Sorrow Can Be Beneficial: Balanced sorrow can inspire repentance and spiritual growth.
  4. Worldly Sorrow Belongs Only to This Life: Earthly sorrow is temporary and has no place in eternity.
  5. Godly Sorrow vs. Worldly Sorrow: Only sorrow that leads to repentance brings salvation.
  6. Fear Gives Birth to Sorrow: Perfect love overcomes fear and sadness.
  7. Sorrow Is Part of Human Nature: In a fallen world, sorrow is an unavoidable human experience.

  9. Under God’s Discipline: Suffering is a spiritual remedy, not merely a punishment.
  10. Main Enemies of Salvation: Sadness and spiritual carelessness hinder salvation.
  11. Hopelessness: Saint talks to Despair directly, confronting it. Despair destroys hope and separates a person from God.
  12. The Demons’ Greatest Joy: Demons rejoice most when a person falls into despair. God doesn’t hate sinners, He eagerly awaits to make them alive.
  13. The Demon of Despondency: Despondency brings spiritual laziness and loss of zeal. Defeating this demon brings calmness and rejoice to the soul.
  14. Suffering Produces Humility: Patiently accepted suffering teaches humility.
  15. Grace Gradually Returns to the Soul: During darkness, our Lord doesn’t leave our soul. After darkness, grace returns through patience and prayer.
    • No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13
  16. Excessive Sorrow: Excessive sorrow clouds the mind and burdens the heart. Can only heal with prayer.
  17. Life Without Grace Is Desolate: Without God’s grace, the soul remains spiritually empty.
  18. Sadness: Sadness weakens prayer, inner peace, and love for others.
  19. Kinds of Sorrow: Different forms of sorrow have different spiritual effects.
  20. Godly Sorrow: Godly sorrow purifies the soul and draws it closer to God.
  21. Despair: Despair robs the soul of hope, love and spiritual life.

  35. Perfection Comes Through Struggle: Spiritual maturity is achieved through faithful struggle.
  36. The Mind Darkened by Despair: Despair clouds the mind and weakens judgment. Avoid sinful passions to stay close to God.

  5. Meekness: Meekness preserves God’s grace, while pride and self-reliance drive it away.
  6. Reject Self-Will and Self-Pity: Renounce selfishness and self-pity by denying yourself and following Christ.
    • Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me – Mark 8:34
  7. Do Not Fear the Struggle: Trials reveal, strengthen, and prove genuine faith and love.
  8. Fight Despair with Scripture: Resist the demon’s hopeless thoughts by remembering God’s promises of mercy and repentance.
    • Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! – Ezekiel 33:11
  9. Open Your Heart to God: Bring every sorrow honestly before God and entrust Him with your troubles.
  10. Never Despair After Falling: No matter how often you fall, choose humility and repentance instead of despair. Do works pleasing to God, be thankful, patient, fear God, and do not judge others. Hell fills us with fear. The Kingdom protects us with love. In both cases, we are saved by the grace of Christ.
  11. Hope Always Exists: God’s grace can renew even the most discouraged soul and restore joy after suffering. Our bodily sins and passions hardened us, but through God and His mercy we were softened. He granted us the ability to observe earthly things clearly. By God’s grace we came to ourselves and were freed from the serpent’s deceit and the many evil thoughts that we had acquired in an unnatural way.
  12. Sorrow for Salvation: God may permit sorrow not to destroy us, but to humble, purify, and save us. What appears to be a burden is often a hidden gift, yet we cling to the gifts we have lost instead of recognizing the new one God has given.
  13. Trials Produce Hope: Endure suffering with faith, knowing that it produces perseverance, character, and hope.
  14. Turn Continually to God: Resist despair by continually turning to God on the narrow path rather than seeking temporary comfort in the pleasures of the broad path.

  16. A Contrite Heart: A humble heart is the surest remedy against despair and spiritual darkness.
  17. Patience: Patient endurance of suffering destroys despair and strengthens the soul.
  18. Remember God: Constant remembrance of God fills the heart with joy, peace, and hope that surpass earthly troubles.
  19. Inner Peace: Avoid unnecessary sorrow and strive to keep a joyful spirit, for grief brings no benefit and robs the soul of peace.
  20. Do Not Despair: There is never a reason to despair, for Christ has conquered death, raised Adam, freed Eve, and won the victory.
  21. The Lord Is Near: Endure every trial with patience, remembering that the Lord is near and will come to calm the storms of your life at the appointed time.
  22. Help Comes Through Effort: God’s help and reward are given to those who persevere in faithful labor. Do not seek an easy life, but remain thankful in every season.
  23. Do Not Turn Back: Even if the journey is difficult, never return to your former sinful life. It is better to persevere faithfully than to abandon the path to Christ.
  24. God Sees Your Patience: God sees every struggle and sends His help in the proper time. Perseverance purifies the mind and weakens the passions.
  25. Dark Clouds Pass Away: Evil thoughts, doubts, anger, and despair are like passing clouds. They do not remain forever, and the light of God will shine again.
  26. A Meek Heart: A meek and humble heart is the cure for despair, negligence, and inner turmoil, bringing lasting comfort to the soul.
  27. Do Not Yield to Despair: After falling into sin, imitate Peter rather than Judas—repent with tears, trust Christ’s mercy, and reject the devil’s accusations.
  28. Receive Sorrow with Gratitude: Accept sorrows wisely and thankfully instead of condemning yourself, seeking first to restore the inner peace that comes from God.
  29. Descend into the Valley of Meekness: In times of sorrow, humble yourself before God. Meekness and repentance raise us higher than pride ever can.
  30. Christ Has Sanctified the Path of Suffering: Through Christ, suffering is no longer meaningless but becomes the path to purification, hope, and eternal joy.
  31. The Final Hour: In the hour of death, reject fear and despair by clinging to Christ’s saving Cross and trusting completely in His redemption.
  32. The Final Battle: The fiercest temptations often come near the end of the spiritual struggle. Stand firm, seek Christ, endure patiently, and remember that those who sow in tears will reap with joy. Carry your cross with meekness, knowing it is given to make you humble and draw you closer to God. A heart founded on Christ cannot be shaken. Crucify yourself for the love of God and your neighbor—for there is nothing higher than living in self-sacrificing love.
  33. Guard Your Heart: You may not always be able to avoid sorrow, but do not let it take possession of your heart or cloud your judgment and actions.
  34. A Sorrowful Heart: Heartfelt sorrow can become a source of spiritual growth, for God reveals His power and healing to those who continue to hope in Him.
  35. A Joyful Spirit: Strive always to preserve inner peace and a joyful spirit, remaining spiritually balanced through every changing season of life.
  36. Christ the Redeemer: There is no suffering, pain, or death that Christ has not taken upon Himself. He shares in every human sorrow.
  37. Look Only to Christ: Fix your eyes on Christ, and your suffering will be transformed into spiritual sweetness as the wounds of your heart are healed by His wounds.
  38. Seek Help from the Lord: In times of sorrow and trial, continually cry out, “Lord, have mercy,” trusting that God hears even the simplest prayer, when it’s spoken with faith and power, bringing God’s help and strengthening the soul.
  39. Turn to God with a Deep Sigh: When no one else can understand your pain, turn to God with a heartfelt cry of, “Lord, have mercy,” for His grace brings comfort and relief to the burdened soul.
  40. Overcome Discouragement: Stop making assumptions and fearful conclusions; think clearly and truthfully instead.
  41. Strengthening Rest: In times of deep sorrow, seek refreshment through wise spiritual counsel and wholesome fellowship, then return strengthened to the spiritual struggle.
  42. Meekness Brings Peace: In temptation and discouragement, meekness is the safest path. It leads to truth, freedom, and the ability to recognize God’s providence instead of being deceived by fear and false thoughts.
  43. Glory to God for Everything: In both sorrow and joy, continually give thanks to God. Heartfelt gratitude drives away confusion, fills the heart with peace and joy, and draws the soul closer to Him.
  44. Spiritual Freedom: The soul must know that true freedom is found in God. Die to self, be free from passions and selfish attachments, and let Christ become the fullness of your heart and the guide of your mind.
  45. Do Not Seek Signs and Meaning in Prayer: Pray simply, humbly, and with repentance, seeking God’s mercy rather than extraordinary experiences or signs.
  46. Repentance Is the Answer: In times of temptation, respond with self-reproach, meekness, and sincere repentance, for God prefers a humble repentant sinner to a proud, self-righteous person.
  47. Pour Out Your Heart: Bring your deepest grief honestly before God in prayer, for pouring out your heart before Him brings comfort, strength, and peace.
  48. The Power of Perseverance: Endure every sorrow with patience, wage the spiritual battle courageously, rise after every fall through repentance, never give in to despair, and entrust everything to God.
  49. Watch and Guard Over Yourself: Keep your eyes on God’s glory rather than your own imagined perfection. Humble vigilance protects the soul from pride, shame, and despair.
    • For we know in part and we prophesy in part – 1 Corinthians 13:9
  50. The Quickest Way to Overcome Sorrow: Do not harbor anger or resentment toward others, for forgiveness quickly drives sorrow from the heart.
  51. Rise After Falling: When you fall, rise without delay. Turn to God’s Word with faith, and you will find comfort, correction, strength, and renewed hope.
  52. Unshakable Courage: Be strict with yourself and gentle with others. Patiently endure alternating seasons of temptation and consolation, trusting that suffering comes before joy and that God never allows trials beyond your strength.
  53. The Path of Self-Denial: Deny your own will, entrust yourself completely to God, and cultivate watchfulness. Self-denial leads to peace, purity of mind, freedom from despair, and the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
  54. God’s Providence: Entrust every circumstance to God’s providence instead of relying on your own understanding. In temptation, persevere in prayer, trusting that God knows best and orders all things for your salvation.
  55. Without Christ the Soul is Nothing: Apart from Christ, the human soul is overwhelmed by sorrow, sin, and death. Only through Him is suffering transformed into eternal joy and life.
  56. The Twin Traps: The enemy attacks through both pride and despair. Fight both with humility: when despair comes, ask, “How is it that not long ago you were praising me and stirring up pride in me?” And when praised and tempted to pride, ask, “How is it that not long ago you were leading me into despair?” Thus, the enemy is defeated with his own weapons.
  57. Faith Over Despair: Faith entrusts every loss and sorrow into God’s hands, protecting the soul from despair, fear, and the living death of unbelief.
  58. Be Patient and You Will See God’s Mercy: Do not surrender to despair. Persevere in prayer, carry your cross faithfully without looking back, and God’s mercy will strengthen you and restore your hope.
  59. Do Not Despair, but Repent: Doubt and despair are overcome not by giving up but by repentance, humility, and trust in God’s power rather than your own weakness.
    • Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” – Matthew 14:31
  60. A Peaceful Life: Stand firm in the Orthodox faith, cultivate purity, humility, obedience, prayer, sobriety, love your guests and every virtue, and God will grant you peace and His Kingdom.
  61. Strengthened by the Eucharist: The Holy Eucharist restores spiritual life, strengthens the soul against sin, and renews the grace of God within us.
  62. Protection from Despair: Frequently make the sign of the Cross, remembering that the demon stands at your left shoulder and your Guardian Angel at your right. Your life is recorded in two books—one of your sins and one of your good deeds—so overcome despair by helping, forgiving, and showing mercy to others.
  63. Universal Hope: Pray without ceasing, remembering that we are all sinners, yet God never abandons those who hope in Him.
  64. Sow the Seed of Good Hope: When despair attacks, divide your soul into two: let one part comfort the other with God’s promises. Speak hope to yourself through Scripture until your soul learns to trust in God again.
  65. Fight Courageously: Do not flee from trials or the demon of despair. Face the battle courageously, for perseverance makes the soul spiritually experienced and strong. Avoidance does not bring experience.
  66. Remember Death: Live as though your soul may die tomorrow and your body may live many years, for the remembrance of death drives away despair and teaches balanced self-discipline.
  67. Remain Unshakable: When the spirit of despair attacks, stand firm without abandoning your place, for steadfast endurance purifies the heart like silver refined by fire.
  68. Awaken the Virtues: When weariness leads to despair, turn to Scripture and the Psalms to awaken the virtues and strengthen your soul.
  69. Prayer Is the Remedy: Prayer is the sure remedy against sorrow and despair.
  70. Tears and Prayer: When darkness overwhelms you, pray sincerely with tears, asking God to scatter the darkness and fill your soul with His light.
  71. Wait for the Light of God’s Grace: When grace seems hidden, do not overthink. Endure patiently, pray, read, and wait faithfully, for God’s light will return and scatter the darkness.
  72. Patience Saves the Soul: Despair weighs down the whole soul, but patient endurance overcomes every passion and leads to salvation.
    • Stand firm, and you will win life. – Luke 21:19
  73. God Will Raise You Up: Even after defeat, never despair. Rise again in repentance, for God upholds those who fall and defeats the enemy on behalf of those who turn back to Him.
  74. Our Sorrow Turns into Joy: Patiently endure suffering, trusting that Christ will visit, comfort you, and transform your sorrow into lasting joy.
  75. The Crown Is Won Through Patience: The crown is given to those who patiently endure trials, trusting Christ—the Great Physician—who heals, comforts, and never forgets His own.
  76. Instruct Your Soul Correctly: When you fall into discouragement, withdraw, gather your thoughts, rebuke despair, and preach hope and God’s mercy to your own soul.
  77. Return to Your Place of Prayer: When despondency and evil thoughts keep you from prayer, return to your usual place of prayer with repentance, tears, and perseverance.
  78. The Jesus Prayer: Drive away the enemy with the Name of Jesus, for there is no stronger weapon in heaven or on earth.
  79. God Will Ease Our Distress: In helplessness and despair, pour out your heart before God in prayer, trusting Him to lighten your burdens. For we confess before God as the One who wisely governs all things.
  80. Do Not Become Anxious: Reject anxious and condemning thoughts, distrust demonic suggestions (which sow seeds of evil), patiently endure trials, and continue serving your neighbor with love. God sends us trials to cleanse us from every impurity.
  81. Everything Happens for Good: Receive every trial with gratitude, trusting that God permits every hardship for your salvation and spiritual growth.
  82. Help from Guardian Angels: Even in suicidal despair, never lose hope; surrender to God’s mercy, listen to your Guardian Angel, and find peace in Christ.
  83. Think Only of the Lord: When past sins stir despair, stop dwelling on yourself and fix your mind on Christ, whose saving work alone gives hope.
  84. Suffering Opens the Door to the Other World: Suffering and longing for God prepare the heart for divine revelation and open the way to deeper communion with Him.
  85. Hope and Meekness: True Christians fight invisible warfare with faith, hope, meekness, and perseverance, never surrendering to despair after falling.
  86. Never Lose Hope: Despair is more dangerous than falling into sin; imitate Peter’s repentance rather than Judas’s hopelessness.
  87. Always Expect Sudden Changes: Expect spiritual seasons to change unexpectedly, remaining steadfast in darkness and humble in consolation.
  88. God’s Providence: Accept every sorrow, illness, and hardship as governed by God’s providence, enduring them courageously until His help comes. Learn to love the narrow path with suffering for salvation.
  89. God-Forsakenness: When God withdraws His felt presence, respond with humility, repentance, thanksgiving, and perseverance, trusting that His hidden grace still sustains the soul during the struggle when God seems to leave us in order to teach us.

Treasury of lessons for spiritual warfare

  1. O Joyful Light: When the Lord is with us, everything becomes light.
  2. Forgetting God: Forgetting God darkens the soul, weakens every virtue, and leads us away from all good.
  3. Sorrow Can Become a Source of Joy: Surrender every care to God’s will, and suffering will become a source of spiritual joy and consolation. No suffering means distance from God.
  4. Losing Grace: Grace is lost through sinful passions and deliberate sin, making the soul a dwelling place for the passions.
  5. Endure to the End and Fight On: Endure suffering like a good soldier of Christ, for only those who persevere according to God’s way receive the crown.
  6. Thanksgiving and Purification: Receive every affliction with thanksgiving, knowing that God uses suffering to purify the soul and prepare it for His Kingdom.
  7. God Tests Like Gold in Fire: God tests His faithful like gold in the furnace, proving and preparing them for eternal glory.
  8. Why Does the Soul Grow Cold?: Spiritual coldness often reveals hidden pride and self-reliance, calling us back to humility and dependence on God.
  9. Force Yourself to Do Good: Resist evil by forcing yourself to do good, for that’s when spiritual effort eventually becomes joyful and natural.
  10. Distrust in God: The moment we stop trusting God and rely on something else, we lose our way and discover every substitute is empty.
  11. Self-Love: Examine yourself for self-love, whether it hides behind pride and self-confidence. Self-love is sneaky, damaging both our relationship with God and with others.
  12. “I Am Not Like the Others”: Beware of hidden pride and self-justification, which reveal themselves when correction or criticism disturbs your heart.
  13. When Effort Ceases: When spiritual effort stops, the fire of the spiritual life gradually grows cold.
  14. On Despondency: Despondency is a sickness of the soul that magnifies small troubles, while a spiritually healthy person learns to rejoice even in times of trial.
  15. Indulging the Passions Kills the Soul: A soul enslaved to the passions becomes spiritually numb and loses communion with Christ.
  16. The God-Pleasing Path Is the Daily Cross: The Christian life is the daily carrying of the cross, not the pursuit of comfort or a path free from suffering.
  17. God Watches Over Our Journey: Our Heavenly Father sees every suffering and, in His wisdom, allows only what is truly necessary for our salvation.
  18. God Cares for Us: Those who continually suffer are under God’s special care.
  19. Causes of Spiritual Coldness: The heart grows cold through anxiety, attachment to worldly things, anger, blame, self-indulgence, and sinful thoughts, but vigilant struggle restores spiritual warmth.
  20. If We Do Not Strive, God Will Not Preserve Our Joy: Strive faithfully while placing all your hope in God rather than yourself, for grace is preserved through humble cooperation with Him, not self-reliance.
    • Cultivate both fear and joy, holding them together inseparably, guarding your joy from turning into carelessness and your fear from extinguishing your joy.
    • Do everything within your power to preserve your joy, but ultimately entrust everything to the Lord.
    • You must never give up striving, making the effort, and placing your hope in God alone.
    • Be careful not to begin thinking: “Ah, there it is! That’s it! So this is what it looks like—I never knew that!” Such thoughts come from the enemy, leaving only emptiness behind and leading to ruin. Continually repeat: “Glory to You, O our God,” and “Lord, have mercy on me.”
    • If, however, you dwell on such imagined ideas, you will soon begin recalling your previous deeds, struggles, and spiritual labors. Then you will start analyzing under which conditions joy and spiritual well-being appeared, when they departed from you, and when they remained and grew stronger. After that, you will decide to pursue a special spiritual method. In this way, you will fall into imagined self-satisfaction, believing that the secret of spiritual growth has finally been revealed to you and that it lies in your own hands. Yet during prayer, the falseness of such imagination will become evident, because your prayer will be empty, distracted, and will bring you no consolation. The only comfort you will find will be in remembering your former spiritual state.
      • This kind of imagination reveals that the soul has once again begun relying on its own efforts rather than on the grace of God.
    • Grace is always grace, independent of any human effort, and the one who mixes it with his own ideas or expectations may be deprived of it.
  21. Inner Turmoil and Inner Light: The remembrance of God brings warmth to the heart, quiets restless thoughts, unites the mind and heart, and restores the inner spiritual life.
  22. The Wise Virgins: Heavenly glory is gained only through patient endurance, suffering, and faithful labor.
  23. Choose the Better Part: Let suffering strengthen your faith and humility instead of judging others, for meekness overcomes bitterness and draws God’s help.
  24. Live Every Day by Faith in God: Do not let hardships or uncertainty rule your heart, but live each day with faith in God without worrying about tomorrow.
  25. Joy Is Above This World: Suffering detaches us from earthly pleasures and leads us to the true joy that surpasses this world in Christ.
  26. Saving Sorrow: Godly sorrow is expressed through self-examination, confession, repentance, and self-condemnation rather than blaming others, leading to God’s mercy.
  27. The Lord Knows Our Hearts: God immediately helps those who reject sinful thoughts, but those who willingly entertain them lose His help and become vulnerable to temptation.
  28. Expect Sorrows: Expect trials rather than trying to avoid them, and you will find peace instead of being overwhelmed by them.
  29. We Are Not Forbidden to Fight: Struggle boldly through prayer and virtue, for God’s power descends upon those who labor faithfully against sin.
  30. The Queen of Heaven Will Always Help You: In every sorrow and affliction, run to the Most Holy Theotokos with tears and prayer, trusting in her powerful intercession.
  31. Awaiting the Bridegroom: Remain spiritually watchful and prepared for Christ’s coming, so that you may enter His Kingdom rather than be found asleep.

Who plants intrusive thoughts in our minds

Unwanted Thoughts: Persistent fears, images, or ideas that enter the mind against our will.

Harmful Effects: They exaggerate problems, disturb peace, and may lead to anxiety or despair.

Not Every Thought Is Ours: Destructive thoughts may oppose our reason, conscience, and true will.

Spiritual Source: The text presents them as deceptive suggestions from evil spirits.

How to overcome intrusive thoughts:

  • Do Not Accept Them: Recognize the thoughts without identifying with them. Remain responsible whether you follow them.

Thoughts do not perform actions: we do.

  • Do Not Argue: Reject them immediately and redirect your attention.

A thought approaches like a thief: if you open the door and begin speaking with it, you let it into your home, and then it robs you.

  • Stay Active: Work, exercise, useful activity, and proper rest weaken them.

Idleness, self-pity, apathy, despair, and depression are the most fertile soil for the growth and multiplication of intrusive thoughts.

  • Reject Self-Pity: Avoid negative self-suggestion and hidden benefits from remaining passive.
  • Pray: Oppose the thought with prayer, gratitude, humility, and blessing others.

Do not think that you can outtalk the thoughts: they are driven away only by the Jesus Prayer and silence within the mind. – St. Anthony of Optina

  • Use the Sacraments: Confession exposes what evil seeks to keep hidden, while the Sacraments provide cleansing and spiritual strength.

Evil spirits hate being exposed above all else; they seek to act in secret.

  • Persevere: The struggle may take time, but continued effort restores peace.
